What’s needed is for a legion of smart, informed designers to emerge who can take on the MBAs at their own game… and win…

Even as interest in design has proliferated, the existence of design industry champions who can explain the promise of the discipline to the wider world at large has hardly materialized…

Designers need to figure out a way to make the entrepreneurs and technologists believe in investing in their talents. They need to make themselves indispensable…

Wine can stain you;
Taurine causes cramp;
Beer can drain you;
And bars can be damp.
Drugs aren’t lawful;
Caffeine makes you twitch;
Cigarettes smell awful;
Clearly, sugar is the best way to scratch the 4pm itch

Urban Retreat: Green Penthouse Nestled on an NYC Rooftop  → dornob.com

Designed by Joel Sanders Architect, this central city residence is focused up and out. Plants are arrayed around the slim stairs leading to the rooftop area above, creating a bridge between the modern interior and organic exterior. The bulkhead housing this connection (along with generous skylights) also brings natural light down into the main apartment.

“As social, economic and ecological conditions continue to worsen and with the increasing sophistication and connectivity of information technology and social media, design for sustainability is now moving towards a new qualitatively different area of exploration: designing to build adaptive capacity.” —

Building Adaptive Capacity: Towards a Design for Sustainability 3.0, by Michael Sammet - Core77

This a good article that helps to convey the idea that the sustainability movement should be more than just about HOW we build things to the larger question of WHAT we should be building.  This also includes ideas such as DESIGNING FOR RESILIENCE and DESIGNING FOR RESOURCEFULNESS…

The New Museum in NYC has become the catalyst for an area-wide transformation of the once-benighted neighborhood into a new mecca for art and culture in downtown Manhattan. Now teaming up with a grab bag of nearby institutions, the museum is toasting the local renaissance with a street fair to end all street fairs: the Festival of Ideas for the New City will take over the sidewalks May 4-8…

The Brasserie: Diller + Scofidio - emphasis on social aspects of dining...  → arcspace.com

I just read an article in the new Metropolis Magazine (April 2011) talking about how this design by Diller + Scofiio of the Brasserie in NYC was one of the first to incorporate “social media” before it was known as such.  Pretty interesting article!

The design emphasizes the social aspects of dining.

Entrance from the street is transformed into the ritual of “making an entrance”. Initially, a sensor in the revolving entry door triggers a video snapshot that is added to a continuously changing display on over the bar, announcing every new patron.

Along the “video beam” composed of 15 side by side LCD monitors, the most recent portrait takes the first position and racks the previous 15 to the right, dropping away the oldest.
